A Radio Telescope for Ireland
Proposal
ARTI (A Radio Telescope for Ireland) is a project to construct and operate a state-of-the-art 32m diameter radio telescope at Birr, County Offaly, on a radio-quiet site provided by Lord Rosse.
The telescope will be used:
- for frontline radio astronomy, geophysics, and ionosphereic
studies
- as a standalone instrument
- jointly with the MERLIN array of radio telescopes in the UK
- jointly with the European VLBI Network - an array of radio telescopes spanning Europe
- to support undergraduate and postgraduate reasearch projects in a wide range of scientific and engineering disciplines
- as an interactive educational tool to convey the excitement of scientific research to second-level students

The operations of the telescope will be jointly managed by a consortium of Irish Universities and Institutes of Technology.
