A Radio Telescope for Ireland

Proposal

ARTI (A Radio Telescope for Ireland) is a project to construct and operate a state-of-the-art 32m diameter radio telescope at Birr, County Offaly, on a radio-quiet site provided by Lord Rosse.

The telescope will be used:

  1. for frontline radio astronomy, geophysics, and ionosphereic studies
    • as a standalone instrument
    • jointly with the MERLIN array of radio telescopes in the UK
    • jointly with the European VLBI Network - an array of radio telescopes spanning Europe
  2. to support undergraduate and postgraduate reasearch projects in a wide range of scientific and engineering disciplines
  3. as an interactive educational tool to convey the excitement of scientific research to second-level students
